A Bit About Me

Toni Smith is a third-year Howard University student and a River Hill High School graduate. Smith is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Afro-American Studies. At Howard, Smith is the Vice President and former Public Relations Chair for the HU Ice Skating Club and a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Association, NAACP, concert band, and Psychology Club. She is also a member of the inaugural International THREADS program, through which she will study psychology and race in Ghana during the spring of 2025. Smith was honored on the COAS Deans List and awarded the Alain Locke Scholar Award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA during the 2022-2023 academic year. Smith is an undergraduate researcher for Debra Roberts, Ph.D., in the Cultural Socialization Lab. The lab focuses on the intersection between culture/ethnicity, psychosocial toxic relationships, and the psychological well-being of youth. Smith's current research focuses on the impact of race on the psychological well-being of African people throughout the diaspora. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, Smith plans to work on her Ph.D. She plans to pursue a career in research and therapy, specializing in Black American youth.

At River Hill, Smith was the President of the Black Leadership Union and a member of the National Honor Society and the Rho Kappa Honor Society. She was also captain and Public Relations Chair for the ice hockey team, a member of the Wind Ensemble, and on the executive board of the Scholars Leadership Program. During high school, Smith also spent much of her time volunteering with the Washington Ice Dogs, an ice hockey program for the developmentally disabled.
