A Bit About Me

Toni Smith is a fourth-year Howard University student, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Africana Studies. At Howard, Smith is the President, and former Vice President and Public Relations Chair for the Howard University Ice Skating Club. She is also a member of the Howard University College of Arts and Sciences Honors Association, the Concert Band, the Psychology Club, the intercollegiate figure skating team, Black Girls Vote, and Psi Chi International Psychological Honor Society. Outside of Howard University, she is a member of the Association of Black Psychologists and the Society of Pediatric Psychology HBCU Jegnaship Program. Smith is also a member of the inaugural International THREADS program cohort, through which she studied psychology and mental healthcare access in Ghana during the spring of 2025. Smith has been honored on the COAS Dean's List from 2022 to 2025 and awarded the Alain Locke Scholar Award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA during the 2022-2023 academic year. Smith is an undergraduate researcher in the Cultural Socialization Lab with Debra Roberts, Ph.D. The lab focuses on the intersection between culture/ethnicity, psychosocial toxic relationships, and the psychological well-being of youth. She is also a research trainee in the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Health at Children's National Hospital, where she studies the impact of trauma and burns on the psychosocial well-being of pediatric burn patients. Also, she is a long-term fellow in the Georgetown University Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Program.

 

Smith's current research focuses on the impact of Eurocentric psychological hegemony and language on the mental healthcare of African patients across the globe. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, Smith plans to pursue her Ph.D., with which she will pursue a career in research and clinical treatment, specializing in pediatric mental health and development, and community-based methods of care.
